My favorite character of the novel is Hans Hubermann.  Out of all the dark and sad things in Liesel's life Hans provides a flicker of happiness and comfort.  I can feel her comfort whenever she sees him.  He is a character that is not for the war but is forced to join to protect his family.  Hans and his son have a ery difficult relationship since we seem him yell at his father for not being in the Nazi party.  Hans gets extremely close to Liesel like she is his actual daughter.  I think that maybe he loves her so much because he lacks that love with his own real son and longs to have it.  Hans also struggles because he is against the Nazis regime but forces himself to do it to protect his family, like when he smacks Liesel for saying she hates Hitler.  Overall, I think this character is my favorite for the comfort he brings to Liesel and the entire novel.

  1. I agree, my favorite character was also Hans Hubermann. Liesel needed someone in her life to provide comfort and stability and Hans did just that. Hans just wants what is best for his family. Death describes Hans as someone who isn't noticed however after the love he gave Liesel it shows what a great man he truley is.. someone who people should value.

  2. I also believe that Hans was a very comforting, loving person. Even though everyone in the household had a tough lifestyle, Liesel and Hans were able to fight through it and find happiness within one another. Hans shows a lot of heart throughout the book by consistently following through with his gut feeling regardless if it was wrong or right. I believe he made the right choice by joining the Nazi regime in order to protect his family.

  3. Hans is a great character, and was written very well. He provides Liesel with a father figure. He wants her to have a good life and maybe have things that he didn't have..He looks at her like she is his own blood. This will ultimately shape her into who she will become later in the book.

  4. Hans is a very good character to pick because he strayed away from the normal thing to do. Hans let a Jew into his basement and did not join the Nazi party which in itself was rather extroadinary giving the circumstances.
